In a Nutshell: the Worlds of Maurice Sendak Exhibit: Introduction

EWU Libraries, in partnership with Temple Beth Shalom, hosted the exhibit In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak from October 27-December 15, 2011. The exhibit was located in the JFK Library Lobby with a display of books and artifacts.

To coincide with the exhibit, EWU Libraries hosted four events in 2011. The following events were:

Wednesday, November 2nd  6-8 pm - Opening Reception  JFK Library

Opening remarks from Rabbi Michael Goldstein. Featuring the Kosher Red Hots klezmer band, storytelling by Karrie Brown. Traditional Jewish light refreshments were served. 

Wednesday, November 9th  6:30-8 pm - Really Rosie  JFK Library

The Spokane Area's Children's Chorus will perform Maurice Sendak and Carole King's musical Really Rosie  Kristina Ploeger, EWU Asst. Professor of Music and Artistic Director of Chorus

Monday, November 14th   6-7:30 pm - Maurice Sendak Video Interview & Panel  Moran Prarie Branch Library

Screening of the documentary Tell Them Anything They Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak, along with a panel of experts moderated by Dr. Marilyn Carpenter, EWU Reading Emeritus Professor

Rita Berman Frischer will speak of Over There and Over Here: An Overview of Holocaust and Immigration in Sendak and other Jewish Children's Literature.

In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak was organized by the Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia, and developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The national tour of the exhibit has been made possible by grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the David Berg Foundation, and an anonymous donor, with additional support from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life.
