Choosing a Database
Since Urban & Regional Planning is quite interdisciplinary, you need to think about what discipline would cover your issue. Below are links for useful disciplinary databases. If you are unsure, try the following all-subjects databases and note what disciplinary journals the relevant articles come from.
- Academic Search Complete (EBSCOhost)Full-text articles on all subjects from about 9000 journals, with indexing and abstracts for at least another 4000 periodicals (including magazines and newspapers) dating back as far as 1887. Also indexes books, reports, and conference proceedings.
- JSTORFull-text back files of over 2100 core scholarly journals in the arts, business, humanities, sciences, and social sciences, from the first issue up to 3-5 years ago.
- Journal of Planning LiteratureWhile the Journal of Planning Literature (JPL) is a journal, it acts like a database of issues in Urban Planning. JPL indexes over 400 journals, and includes listings by subject.

Business, Public Administration or Budgeting Issues
- EBSCOhost's Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete & SocINDEX with Full TextSearch these three databases simultaneously to locate articles from public administration and related journals.
- WorldWide Political Science Abstracts -- 1975-presentThis political science database covers around 25 journals devoted to public administration from around the world.
- JSTOR Public Policy & Administration JournalsFull-text articles from over 15 public policy and public administration journals, from the first issue up to 3-5 years ago. Includes Administrative Science Quarterly and Public Administrative Review.
Public Policy Issues
- Worldwide Political Science Abstracts -- 1975-presentCovers political science, international relations, law and public administration from around 1500 journals.
- JSTORFull-text back files of over 60 political science journals from the first issue up to 3-5 years ago, including American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, etc. Also includes another 900 core scholarly journals in the arts, business, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
- SocINDEX with Full Text (EBSCOhost)Comprehensive database for sociology, with some coverage of political science and criminal justice. Covers over 2500 journals, along with relevant books and conference proceedings. Includes over 10,000 author profiles.
- LexisNexis Academic LegalFull-text articles from over 500 law reviews & 300 legal magazines/newspapers; federal & state court cases (including the ability to Shepardize) and federal & state codes.
- Social Sciences Full Text (EBSCOhost) -- 1984-presentIndexing and abstracts for over 625 social science periodicals, including over 400 peer-reviewed journals. Full text of some 215 journals back to 1995.
Engineering or Scientific Issues
- IEEE Xplore (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)Full-text articles from around 250 journals, around 875 conference proceedings, and over 1900 IEEE standards. Also includes over 450 full text eBooks published by MIT Press. Full coverage is back to 1988, with selected coverage back to 1913.
- Web of Science -- 1995-present (sciences); 1992-present (social sciences)Indexes articles and analyzes citations from over 8,500 scientific journals back to 1995, and another 3,000 social sciences journals back to 1992.
- Applied Science & Technology Abstracts (EBSCOhost) -- 1983-presentCovers over 700 core journals and magazines in chemistry, energy, engineering, physics, etc.
- SpringerLinkFull-text articles from around 1600 journals (mainly scientific and medical) back to 1997; indexing only for another 900 journals, books, and protocols.
Social Issues
- SocINDEX with Full Text (EBSCOhost)Comprehensive database for sociology. Covers over 2500 journals, along with relevant books and conference proceedings. Includes over 10,000 author profiles.
- JSTORFull-text back files of over 70 sociology journals from the first issue up to 3-5 years ago, including Social Forces, Sociological Quarterly, etc. Also includes another 900 core scholarly journals in the arts, business, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
- Sage Journals OnlineFull-text articles from nearly 475 social sciences & humanities journals, back to 1999. Indexing only for articles older than 1999 & around 30 journals this library does not subscribe to. Click "Sage Content Available to Me" to limit to full text.
- Social Sciences Full Text (EBSCOhost) -- 1984-presentIndexing and abstracts for over 625 social science periodicals, including over 400 peer-reviewed journals. Full text of some 215 journals back to 1995.
Architectural Issues
- Art Abstracts (EBSCOhost) -- 1984-presentA comprehensive database for art and related subjects (architecture, graphics, interior design, etc.) indexing articles from over 375 journals.
- Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals - Riverpoint Only!Offers access to around 2,500 architecture journals, dating back to the mid-18th century. NOTE: This is a WSU database, so you must be physically on the Riverpoint Campus to access it!
