Making a Claim for Literary Analysis

How to cite literary sources and use "quotes"

Literary analysis relies on the use of quotations and or paraphrasing from a text to provide evidence and examples for that analysis. This presentation will guide you through the process of:

  • Coming up with a claim
  • Writing an appropriate thesis or topic sentence to state that claim for the essay or for a body paragraph
  • Finding appropriate examples from a text to quote or paraphrase
  • How to insert those quotes into your own writing
  • How to add your own analysis to explain how the quote(s) demonstrate your claim
