Writing Your Paper 2: Drafting

How to write a strong first draft

Conclusions

A conclusion sums up points made previously in the body paragraphs, but it does so much more than this. Though the final paragraph of your paper is not the place to introduce brand new ideas, a good conclusion will explore the broader significance of your thesis. You’ll expand your thinking outward a bit.

This website provides a handy checklist to follow for your conclusion paragraph:

  1. Did you restate your thesis accurately but with slightly different wording than in the introduction?
  2. Are the main points of the paper brought together?
  3. Did you remind your readers of the topic's importance?
  4. Is there a sense of closure?
  5. Do you avoid presenting new information?
