ARTH 340 - Native North American Art - Artwork Research

This guide supports Native North American Art (ARTH 340) students in researching native artists and collectives, using primarily electronic resources available through the EWU Libraries.

Below you will find 3 suggested steps for researching your artist/collective, with links to relevant resources and some directions and tips.

You will also find suggestions for evaluating your sources for reliability and credibility.

Please don't hesitate to be in touch with me to request assistance with research for this project.  My email address is or message me through Canvas.

Best of luck with your assignment!

Step 1 - Grove Art (Oxford Art Online)

**Please note that not all artists and collectives will have entries in Grove Art.  If there is an entry on your artist/collective, then this is a great source of background information.**

  • Search for your artist/collective's name to see if there is an entry in Grove Art.
    • View the Grove Art video tutorial available on Canvas (sign in with your EWU SSO).
    • Use quotation marks around the artist's name to specify that you want the entire name to be searched, such as "Marie Watt".
  • Use the PDF icon in the upper right area of the window to export a copy of the entry.
  • Use the bibliography and publications list at the end of the entry to identify additional sources of information.

Step 2 - Scholarly Articles and Book Chapters

Use the EWU Library catalog to locate electronic scholarly articles and books on your artist/collective.

Search by artist/collective name and limit to "Available online". This will allow you to see only content available online. Also use the Format facet to exclude Newspaper Articles and Reviews.

See Video 2 and the Powerpoint presentation for instructions on how to search and access resources.

Step 3 - Websites

Please see Video 3 and the Powerpoint slides for guidance on searching and evaluating websites.

For some criteria to use when evaluating websites, visit the EWU Libraries' Evaluating Websites page.

Session Evaluation

Please complete an evaluation in Survey Monkey that tells me what went well and didn't go well in these recorded sessions.  The survey is anonymous and has nothing to do with your performance in this course.
