Citations and Citation Management

Use the Citation Help Research Guide for general information about citation styles and citation management software.

Chicago and/or Turabian is the commonly-used citation style for Art History. However, consult your instructor for their preferred citation style for their course and assignments.

For image citation, see the Image Resources > Citing Images page on this guide.

Citation Chaining

Citation chaining is a strategy researchers use to leverage the web of citations around a relevant information source (article, book, etc.). Use backwards chaining to mine the References/Bibliography/Works Cited for additional useful resources. Use forward chaining to locate resources that have cited the resource.

The University of Oregon has an excellent guide on how to do both backwards and forwards chaining: https://researchguides.uoregon.edu/litreview/citation-chaining. Remember to substitute the EWU Library catalog, databases, etc., rather than the UO resource links.
