The Rainbow Representation Rubric: Auditing LGBTQIA+ Picture Books

The Rainbow Book List is created by the Rainbow Book List Committee of the Rainbow Round Table of the American Library Association. Originally a joint project between the Rainbow Round Table (formerly Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table) and the Social Responsibilities Round Table, the Rainbow Book List presents an annual bibliography of quality books with significant and authentic LGBQTIA+ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age.

The CCBC-Recommended Book Search includes titles that the staff of the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have recommended in various editions of their annual best-of-the-year list, CCBC Choices.

The Diverse BookFinder is a comprehensive collection of children's picture books featuring Black and Indigenous people and People of Color (BIPOC). They have cataloged and analyzed trade picture books fitting this criteria, published since 2002.

GLSEN works to ensure that LGBTQ students are able to learn and grow in a school environment free from bullying and harassment. Together with educator and family partners, they hope to transform the nation’s K-12 schools into the safe and affirming environment that all youth deserve.

The HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is a comprehensive bias-based bullying prevention program providing LGBTQ+ and gender inclusive professional development training, lesson plans, booklists and resources specifically designed for educators and youth-serving professionals. Their program uses an intersectional, anti-racist lens dedicated to actionable policies and practices. They provide school communities with critical tools to embrace family diversity, create LGBTQ+ and gender inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying, and support transgender and non-binary students.
