Step 2 - Identify a Relevant Exhibition Catalog in the Grove Bibliography

Assignment 1.2—Identify an exhibition catalog (links to assignment in Canvas)

Use the Bibliography section of the Grove Art Online entry on your artist to identify and select an exhibition catalog that discusses your artist prominently.

 

Watch this video tutorial of the process for reviewing the Bibliography, identifying the exhibition catalogs, and deciphering other elements of the citation.

 

The following abbreviations are used in the Bibliography:

  • exh. cat. = exhibition catalog
    • "document the contents and intellectual thrust of temporary exhibitions" (from the Grove Art entry for Catalogues)
  • cat. rais. = catalogues raisonnés
    • "attempt to establish the oeuvre of an artist" (from the Grove Art entry for Catalogues)
  • ed. = editor
  • By = author
  • Publishers are often shortened; for example:
    • Contemp. A. Mus. = Contemporary Art Museum
    • MOMA = Museum of Modern Art

The following formatting is used in the Bibliography:

  • Italics = title of publication (monograph or journal)
  • Quotation marks = title of article in a journal or book chapter/essay in a monograph
